Verily I say unto
you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little
child, he shall not enter therein.
Brethren:
A good number of
years ago, this writer was at a church service. There was a couple
that attended this church that had an older child about twenty years
of age, with down syndrome. His trust and joy in all that met and
greeted him was quite evident upon his face. It shone in a glow that
radiated beyond happiness. As worship began, his attention was turned
to it and in his best voice he sang with such exuberance that he put
many of the congruent's to shame. It was impressed upon the mind of
this editor that this is what Christ meant by coming to the kingdom
as a child.
Some might wonder as
to how this can be for surely he couldn’t truly fathom what was
going on during the service. However it is my belief, that he was
indeed lead by the Holy Spirit, who according to scripture gives
wisdom to all men liberally. (See Proverbs 2:6; James 1:5) Such is
the joy and knowledge of Christ in the heart of any person, when they
come to Him Whose love transcends all things.
“We must receive the kingdom of God as little children; that is, we must stand affected to Christ and his grace as little children do to their parents, nurses, and teachers. We must be inquisitive, as children, must learn as children (that is the learning age), and in learning must believe, Oportet discentem credere—A learner must believe. The mind of a child is white paper (tabula rasa—a mere blank), you may write upon it what you will; such must our minds be to the pen of the blessed Spirit. Children are under government; so must we be. Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? We must receive the kingdom of God as the child Samuel did, Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth. Little children depend upon their parents’ wisdom and care, are carried in their arms, go where they send them, and take what they provide for them; and thus must we receive the kingdom of God, with a humble resignation of ourselves to Jesus Christ, and an easy dependence upon him, both for strength and righteousness, for tuition, provision, and a portion”
