The First Epistle General of John
Chapter 4:7-11
Geneva Bible Translation Ed. 1599

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love cometh of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love.
9 Herein was that love of God made manifest amongst us, because God sent that his only begotten Son into this world, that we might live through him. (a)
10 Herein is that love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be a reconciliation for our sins. (b)
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

(a) John 3:16
(b) KJV uses the word “propitiation” - That which propitiates; atonement or atoning sacrifice; specifically, the influence or effects of the death of Christ in appeasing the divine justice, and conciliating the divine favor - source Webster’s Dictionary Ed. 1828, 1913

The love of God the Father for “his only Son” (v. 9) is the source of the love that binds the fellowship of believers together as a family. By giving us His Son, the Father introduced us to the perfect love and eternal life that the Father and the Son have always enjoyed. - Reformation Study Bible
