The First Epistle General of John
Chapter 3:1-9
Geneva Bible Translation (Ed. 1599)
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purgeth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever commiteth sin, transgresseth also the Law: for sin is the transgression of the Law.
5 And ye know that he was made manifest, that he might take away our sins, and in him is no sin. (a)
6 Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not: whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, neither hath known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you, he that doeth righteousness, is righteous, as he is righteous.
8 He that commiteth sin, is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning: for this purpose was made manifest that Son of God, that he might loose the works of the devil. (b)
9 Whosoever is born of God sinneth not: for his seed remaineth in him, neither can he sin, because he is born of God.
(a) Read Isaiah 53:6, 9; 2 Peter 2:22
(b) Read John 8:44
As those taught by the Spirit, believers know an entire system of truth and life that remains hidden to those who are in the world. Essential to this is knowing that although for the time being it may not be outwardly recognized, we can still be sure that we are “children of God” and “born of him.” The public revelation of this truth waits for the public revelation of God Himself “when he appears,” at the Second Coming. True children of God will bear the family likeness, both now, as our hope lends our lives a focused purity resembling His, and at the end, when “we shall be like him.” Only then will our knowledge of Him be complete, but even now our knowledge that “he is righteous” will bring increasing righteousness to our own lives. - Source; Reformation Study Bible
