 Short Sunday Sermon - Our Daily Bread

“Give us this day our daily bread”
The Gospel According to Matthew Chapter 6:11

It goes without saying that these verse in what we now call the Lord’s prayer, conveys to us that we ask our Creator to provide and attend to our daily needs in so far as providing nourishment for our bodies. Yet I sense a deeper meaning. Remember in Matthew 4:4, our Savior is quoting from the Book of Deuteronomy 8:3, wherein it says that man lives by the very words of God that proceeds from the mouth of the Father. When we ask for bread, let us be mindful that we also need to feed the spirit as well.

John Wesley writes and explains it this way;

Give us - O Father (for we claim nothing of right, but only of thy free mercy) this day - (for we take no thought for the morrow) our daily bread - All things needful for our souls and bodies: not only the meat that perisheth, but the sacramental bread, and thy grace, the food which endureth to everlasting life.
